Hallim Small Cinema: A Cozy Movie Night in a Rural Village in the Age of Multiplexes

Opened in 2021, Hallim Small Cinema sits next to Hallim Gymnasium, with plenty of parking. You can check showtimes and book tickets on the website. It has two screens (about 60 seats and 40 seats) plus a snack bar, and tickets are affordable at around 7,000 KRW per person (around 6,000 KRW for children).

Here’s a small cinema that may be tiny, but still has everything you need.

You probably won’t end up here on a short trip, but a lot of people come to Jeju for a month-long stay—and even many Jeju locals don’t know about these small cinemas.

Since it’s a cinema in a rural village, I expected an old building and dated facilities, but it’s actually a newer theater that opened in 2021.

I heard it was built as part of a project by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism to bring cultural benefits to underserved areas.

Because it’s located next to Hallim Gymnasium, the parking area is spacious and convenient.

On the Hallim Small Cinema website (https://hallim.scinema.kr), you can check what’s currently showing as well as upcoming films.

And of course, you can book tickets online, too.

Last December, I went with my kids to watch Avatar 2.

Even for our whole family, it was just 22,000 KRW!

I hear a multiplex ticket is around 15,000–16,000 KRW per person—so getting 4 tickets for this price is an absolute win.

When I visited again a few days ago to watch Slam Dunk, I noticed the price had gone up a bit.

Apparently, distributors raised fairness concerns, so the ticket price was increased starting January 1, 2023.

Still, at 7,000 KRW per person and 6,000 KRW for children, it’s a great deal.

It may be a small cinema, but it doesn’t feel like anything is missing.

The snack bar sells coffee, drinks, and popcorn.

I also heard outside food is allowed as long as it doesn’t have a strong smell.

The lobby also has seating where you can sit back and relax.

There are two screening rooms in total: Screen 1 has about 60 seats, and Screen 2 has about 40 seats.

With the smaller seating layout, it was easier to stay immersed in the movie, which I really liked.

A small cinema located next to Hallim Gymnasium, this cultural space lets you enjoy new releases as well as independent and art films up close. Though compact, it offers a pleasant viewing environment and is loved by both locals and travelers as an easy, welcoming place to watch a movie. Serving as a cultural hub for western Jeju, it’s also a great spot to enjoy a different kind of downtime during your trip.
