Walking the Keun-eong Coastal Scenic Trail

Keun-eong Coastal Scenic Site in Namwon-eup, Seogwipo-si features an approximately 2km seaside walking path where you can enjoy forest trails, ocean views, and basalt cliffs together. The Korean Peninsula photo spot had a long line, and the “Indian Chief Face Rock” left a strong impression.

I visited Keun-eong Coastal Scenic Site, famous for its Korean Peninsula-shaped photo spot. I’d wanted to go at least once since so many photos used to circulate on social media, and since I had an errand in Namwon, I took my time and enjoyed a leisurely walk.

This is a beautiful walking course where the Jeju sea, rugged rock cliffs, and a dense forest path come together in harmony. “Keuneong” is a Jeju dialect word referring to a large rock shade or cave formed in a seaside cliff—true to its name, you can enjoy distinctive coastal cliff scenery here. The seaside walkway is relatively gentle, making it easy for visitors of all ages to stroll, and along the way you’ll encounter Jeju’s signature views created by the blue ocean and basalt cliffs. Loved as a healing walk thanks to the natural forest trail and refreshing ocean 전망, it’s considered a must-visit spot when traveling in southeastern Jeju.

Walking path at Keun-eong Coastal Scenic Site

Located in Namwon-eup, Seogwipo-si, Keun-eong Coastal Scenic Site is a walking trail created along an about 2km coastal route, and it’s easy to find if you head toward Kumho Resort.

Overall, the path is laid out like a forest tunnel, and every now and then you’ll come to open views where the sea spreads out in front of you.

The Korean Peninsula photo spot I’d seen so often on social media

From a distance, it seems they maintain the trees so the outline looks like the Korean Peninsula. It wasn’t as impressive or interesting as I’d expected.

Still, it’s a place that continues to draw crowds who come to snap proof shots.

I had to wait in a long line to take a photo.

The most worth-seeing thing was the “Indian Chief Face Rock.”

“Indian Chief Face Rock”

Who came up with that name?

They named it well. It’s just a rock shaped like a human face, but once you call it an “Indian chief,” you find yourself looking again, wondering what part resembles one.

I wanted to walk quietly while listening to the waves, but music drifting over from nearby Kumho Resort and the noise from water play got in the way.

Recently there was an issue in Jungmun related to Booyoung Group about the privatization of scenery around the Jusangjeolli area, and I hadn’t felt much about it.

But as I walked the Keun-eong Coastal Scenic Trail, it hit me anew how negatively the privatization of scenery can affect society.

A culture center with its doors locked
A sports park that looks like it will be used as Kumho Resort’s garden
Keun-eong Sports Park, neglected and left abandoned
