Silver grass may be the first thing that comes to mind when you think of autumn in Jeju, but turn your eyes toward the forest and another palette emerges. If hiking to the summit of Hallasan Mountain feels too demanding, seek out the red foliage of Cheona Valley and the golden scenery along Jeju National University’s ginkgo road. Even within Jeju, autumn arrives in a slightly different form at each destination.
For a deep, vivid red autumn, visit Cheona Valley. If you prefer a light and easy encounter with golden autumn scenery, Jeju National University’s ginkgo road is a great choice.
Red Hues Among the Rocks: Cheona Valley
Cheona Valley is more than a fall foliage spot where you simply gaze up at the trees. Shades of red, orange, and yellow overlap along the rugged rocks and valley. The sight of the entire forest appearing to change color at once is beautiful, but there is also joy in discovering fallen leaves tucked between the rocks one by one.

If you do not plan to walk the entire Cheona Forest Trail, simply exploring the scenery around the valley entrance is also worthwhile. However, the ground is too uneven for thin shoes, despite descriptions of it as an “easy walk.” Wear comfortable sneakers, and after rain, check whether the trail is open before visiting.

Golden Autumn Along the Road: Jeju National University’s Ginkgo Road
If autumn in Cheona Valley is deep and intense, autumn along Jeju National University’s ginkgo road is bright and cheerful. When the ginkgo leaves turn yellow, the familiar road briefly feels like somewhere else. It is an easy scene to add to a Jeju City itinerary, even on days when you do not have time for a long walk.

Keep in mind that this is not a dedicated walking trail for taking photos, but an active road used by vehicles. No matter how eager you are to capture the scenery, do not stop in the road or pull over on the shoulder. It is best to park in a safe place and enjoy the view slowly from an area where pedestrians are permitted.

If You Prefer a More Comfortable Walk
If the rocky valley trail feels too demanding, Halla Arboretum in Jeju City is another option. Rather than a landscape blanketed in a single color, it is more of a place to stroll along forest paths while noticing the different autumn hues of each tree. It is especially suitable when your travel schedule is packed or you want to take a short break in Jeju City.
Check Before Visiting
The photos in this article were taken during the autumn seasons of 2021–2023. The timing of the fall colors varies each year. Access to Cheona Valley may be restricted after rain, so check the Hallasan Dulle-gil Trail information before setting out.
You do not have to climb high to experience Jeju’s autumn in all its vivid color. Which would you like to see first this year: the red valley or the golden road?
