Hiking Hallasan with the family: Eoseungsaengak Trail.

Eoseungsaengak at the Hallasan Eorimok entrance is a gentle trail you can do in about an hour round-trip. From the summit lookout, you can take in snowy views of Hallasan’s ridgelines, Jeju City, and even the west coast of Jeju. In winter, crampons are a must.

I’d long known that Hallasan gets a lot of snow, but I never quite had the nerve to climb it—so I hadn’t been able to go see the snow-covered scenery. One happy weekend, I looked up and the weather was so nice. So I decided to head to Hallasan with the kids.

Eoseungsaengak is located at the Eorimok entrance. It’s not on the route to Baengnokdam, but an oreum on the slopes of Hallasan. Since we were hiking with young children, we chose Eoseungsaengak instead of Hallasan. It takes about 30 minutes to go up, and even at a child’s pace, 40–50 minutes is plenty—so without having to tackle Hallasan itself, you can still enjoy beautiful winter scenery here at Eoseungsaengak.

When we arrived at the Eorimok entrance, the weather was worse than expected. But the higher we climbed, the more we could feel it clearing up.

The rime ice sparkled beautifully. The climb may be short, but Eoseungsaengak is still high—at 1,169m above sea level.

If you’re hiking on snowy mountains, crampons are truly essential. Even if it’s an easy trail, going up unprepared can lead to a serious injury—so if you’ve decided to head for the snow, be sure to bring crampons. Even on this hike, I saw several hikers struggling because they didn’t have them.

At the top, we were rewarded with truly incredible scenery. Looking out over Hallasan’s snowy landscape feels like stepping beyond the boundaries of everyday life.

Located near the entrance to the Eorimok Trail on Hallasan, this oreum offers a short round-trip course of about 1 hour where you can take in Hallasan’s majestic scenery. Follow the lush forest path up to the summit observatory, where you’ll get sweeping views of Hallasan’s ridgeline, Jeju City, and even the west coast of Jeju. The trail is relatively gentle and well maintained, making it an easy climb for beginners and families, and the scenery changes beautifully with each season. If climbing Hallasan feels like too much, this is a recommended route to experience its charms in a lighter way.
