Here’s a beloved old-school local spot near Seogwipo Olle Market: Dongwan Sikdang.
It’s already well-known for its great-value galchi-jorim (braised hairtail).

I thought parking would be tough, but luckily there’s a public parking lot right in front, so it was really convenient.
Just looking at the exterior, you can tell it’s a place with years of history and know-how.
It’s a small neighborhood restaurant, so there are only five tables.
I hate waiting, so I went early on purpose—but I still barely got a seat.
If I’d been a little later, I probably would’ve had to wait..

The menu prices are unbelievably reasonable.
Except for a few dishes meant to go with drinks, the most expensive meal item is 10,000 won! And even that is mulhoe at that price—wow.
I’d already decided on galchi-jorim before coming, so I didn’t even consider anything else and ordered the galchi-jorim.
(These were the prices when I visited in late December 2022. Starting January 1, 2023, galchi-jorim increased from 8,000 won to 10,000 won.)

Galchi-jorim doesn’t really need side dishes, but the basic banchan that come out are all so neat and home-cooked that you keep reaching for them.

At such a kind price, I wondered if the hairtail might be domestic—but it’s not, either.

I thought it might be just one or two pieces of fish with lots of vegetables, but—
for two servings, there were a generous 8 hearty pieces of hairtail!

It’s not the “whole hairtail braise” packed with seafood, but with the essentials—hairtail and radish—it’s more than enough to make a delicious, pleasantly spicy galchi-jorim.
A great-value spot where you can enjoy a flavor that stays true to the basics.

Starting January 1, the galchi-jorim price went up from 8,000 won to 10,000 won.
Even so, it’s still a great-value restaurant, right?
It’s especially a great option for travelers who came alone and couldn’t try galchi-jorim elsewhere because single servings weren’t available.
Every menu item can be ordered as a single serving, so I saw quite a few people dining solo, too.

An old Korean restaurant located near Seogwipo Maeil Olle Market, where you can enjoy a variety of Jeju regional dishes—including braised cutlassfish and cutlassfish soup—at reasonable prices. Its braised cutlassfish option for solo diners is especially popular, earning steady love from both travelers and locals. Open from breakfast through dinner, it’s easy to stop by. Rather than being flashy, it’s known for a warm, welcoming atmosphere and a hearty meal—one of Seogwipo’s representative local eateries.
