When people think of summer water activities in Jeju, the sea usually comes to mind first. But anyone who has ever dipped their feet into spring water knows the moment when, after stepping in with a body warmed by the sun, the unexpectedly cold water makes them draw a sharp breath.
That intense chill was also what stood out while visiting Cheonggulmul, Nonjitmul, and Saengsucheon. Add Donnaeko Wonang Falls, found in a forest valley, and Jeju’s cold-water experiences can be divided into four types according to their atmosphere and level of difficulty.
Cheonggulmul and Nonjitmul are places where spring water rises beside the sea, while Saengsucheon is closer to a water park designed for easy visits with children. Wonang Falls offers a chance to stand beneath falling water and swim in a deep pool formed by valley water flowing down Hallasan Mountain. They are all cold, but each requires quite different preparation.

Cheonggulmul, a peaceful spring beside the sea

This is a living heritage site where people once collected and used clear spring water bubbling up near the shore. Its distinctive scenery—round stone water basins set against the sea—has made it a 대표 photo spot in eastern Jeju. The view changes with the tides, and you can enjoy the unusual landscape created by the calm ocean and the freshwater spring. It’s a great hidden gem to visit along with a walk at Gimnyeong Beach.
플레이스 보기Located on the Gimnyeong coast, Cheonggulmul initially looks like a small circular swimming pool connected to the sea. Spring water rising between the basalt rocks collects here, with the Jeju sea spreading out directly beside it to create a remarkable landscape.

Although it is not large, the water is so clear that the bottom is plainly visible, and the contrasting colors of the sea and spring water are striking. At first, dipping your feet in simply feels refreshing, but once the water rises past your knees and reaches your waist, your expression quickly changes.
Cheonggulmul is better suited to briefly cooling off and enjoying the surrounding coastal scenery than to swimming for a long time. The bottom is slippery and the basalt can be sharp, so aqua shoes are recommended. As the atmosphere changes with the tides and waves, it is safer to stay away from the water when the sea is rough.
Cheonggulmul is ideal for
Travelers who prefer peaceful coastal scenery to a crowded water park · People who want a brief taste of cold water rather than a long swim · Those who want to see distinctive aerial scenery and beautiful water colors
Nonjitmul, a spacious natural pool where spring water meets the sea

This is a natural spring-water coastal area where clear water flowing down from Hallasan meets the sea, creating a unique natural setting. It was once called “Nonjitmul,” meaning the spring water that used to flow out as agricultural water was simply let run; today, it is used as a natural freshwater pool operated in summer. Because it sits right next to the ocean, you can feel both freshwater and seawater at the same time. With relatively shallow depth, it’s also a popular spot for families to enjoy playing in the water. Nearby, Yerae Coastal Road and sections of the Olle Trail connect through the area, making it great for a walk or a drive. It’s also close to the Jungmun Tourist Complex, making it easy to visit together.
플레이스 보기Of the four locations, Nonjitmul best embodies the idea of “summer water activities.” A broad swimming area has been created beside the sea, where spring water mixes with seawater, making it cold but relatively comfortable for a longer stay.

Families with children, people floating on tubes, and visitors sitting at the edge with only their feet in the water all enjoy the site in different ways. If Cheonggulmul is a small and peaceful spring-water spot, Nonjitmul is more like a natural seawater pool where groups can spend the entire day together.
Shade is limited, and the site can become crowded during peak season, so it is a good idea to check in advance where mats or sun shelters may be used. As this coastal swimming spot is affected by tides and waves, on-site restrictions and safety guidance should always take priority.
Nonjitmul is ideal for
Families or groups who want to enjoy the water together · People who want to relax and float on a tube · Those who want to enjoy both ocean scenery and spring water
Saengsucheon, a convenient place to spend the day with children

A popular summer water-play spot featuring a shallow water playground created using natural valley stream water, making it especially popular with families. Thanks to the cold stream water flowing through, it stays refreshingly cool even in the height of summer. The water isn’t deep, so it’s an easy, worry-free place to visit with children. With tree shade and resting areas nearby, it’s also great for spending a relaxed, picnic-like day. Its biggest charm is enjoying water play in nature. Located close to the Jungmun Tourist Complex, it’s an ideal quick stop on your itinerary and a consistently visited hidden summer getaway in Jeju for families with kids. Especially on hot days, it’s a 대표 summer spot in Seogwipo, Jeju where you can enjoy both cooling water fun and relaxation in nature.
플레이스 보기Rather than an untouched natural spring, Saengsucheon is closer to a water park equipped for children to play comfortably. Its pools, slides, and rest areas are gathered in one place, making preparation and movement relatively easy for parents.

It has less of the natural basalt-coast atmosphere found at Cheonggulmul or Nonjitmul, but it is much more convenient for children who repeatedly go in and out of the water. If enjoying the water is the main goal, this place earns points for practicality rather than scenery.
Opening dates, admission procedures, and facility operations can vary by season. Check the current year’s operating notice before visiting to avoid a wasted trip.
Saengsucheon is ideal for
Families who want to enjoy the water with young children · People who value facilities and convenience more than a natural valley · Visitors who want to use both slides and pools
Donnaeko Wonang Falls, the most intense chill in the forest

A natural waterfall located in the Donnaeko Valley of Seogwipo City. Clear water flowing down from Hallasan cascades along the cliff, creating a beautiful landscape. Below the falls, a deep pool with striking emerald-colored water forms, giving the area a mysterious atmosphere. With lush forest and valley scenery, it feels cool even in midsummer, and its relatively quiet setting makes it appealing for experiencing Jeju’s nature up close. It’s great to visit together with the Donnaeko Trail, and is recommended for travelers who want a relaxing walk and healing time in nature.
플레이스 보기Wonang Falls is different from the other three locations from the outset. Rather than being beside the sea, it lies within Donnaeko’s dense evergreen forest, where cold valley water flowing down Hallasan Mountain divides into two cascades and falls into a deep pool.

It takes about 20 minutes to walk along the trail from the Donnaeko entrance, but as soon as the jade-colored water comes into view while descending the stairs, the effort is quickly forgotten. Even standing at the water’s edge, the air feels different, and dipping your feet in reveals a coldness that is difficult to compare with seawater.
In summer, many visitors stand under the falls or swim below them. However, this is not a place to enter casually simply because the water looks beautiful. The deepest area is reportedly more than 3m deep, and diving is prohibited. Entry into the water may also be restricted on rainy days for safety.

The dates and hours when water access is permitted may change each year. Operations are generally limited to summer, so be sure to check official notices and on-site guidance on the day of your visit. For young children, it is better to choose a relatively safer nearby section of the valley instead of the deep pool beneath the falls.
Wonang Falls is ideal for
People who want to enjoy both forest and valley scenery · Visitors seeking an intense cold-water experience after a walk · Strong swimmers who can bring proper safety equipment

Convenience: Low due to the walk and stairs
Recommended for: Travelers seeking natural scenery and intense cold
The colder the water, the more carefully you should prepare
All four places are cold enough to beat the midsummer heat, but because the water is so chilly, it is better to begin with your hands and feet and acclimate slowly instead of immersing your entire body at once.
Bring aqua shoes for slippery surfaces and basalt rocks, as well as life jackets for children and inexperienced swimmers. Avoid entering the water after drinking alcohol, crossing into restricted areas, or diving without checking the depth.
Cheonggulmul and Nonjitmul, both located on the coast, are particularly affected by tides and waves, while Wonang Falls is strongly influenced by rainfall and valley conditions. Safety guidance on the day of your visit should always take priority over the scenery you saw in photographs.
Choose Cheonggulmul for a peaceful spring, Nonjitmul for fun with a group, Saengsucheon for a convenient outing with children, or Wonang Falls for the most intense cold-water experience in the forest.
Even within Jeju, each water destination presents a completely different summer scene. On a day when the sea alone does not feel like enough, consider choosing a cold-water spot that suits your travel style.
