A Spectacle of Silver Grass at Akeun Darangshi Oreum

I headed out early in the morning. It was to hike Akeun Darangshi Oreum, which has been gaining attention lately as a silver grass hotspot. Located on the east side of Jeju, it was a first for us too—even after six years of living here as a couple.

Since it had been a while since we’d ventured east, we stopped here and there to run a few errands, and before we knew it the sun was already lowering in the sky. Akeun Darangshi Oreum sits near Darangshi Oreum, and “akeun” means “small” in Jeju dialect. From below, Akeun Darangshi Oreum simply felt like a little hill behind a neighborhood.

But once you reach the top, you realize it’s an oreum with truly stunning scenery.

The summit of Akeun Darangshi Oreum is incredibly spacious. The climb up takes only about 10 minutes, but walking the loop trail along the rim took more than 30 minutes. I think it has a crater similar in size to Geum Oreum on the west side.

I was truly happy while walking the rim trail of Akeun Darangshi Oreum. Walking through so much silver grass is a romantic experience.

From the top, I could just make out the peak of Seongsan Ilchulbong in the distance, and glimpses of Udo as well.

Even though there were many visitors, the summit didn’t feel crowded. It’s so wide and filled with silver grass that I could enjoy quiet contemplation without paying attention to others.

The warm sunlight made the silver grass glow, and the gentle breeze set it dancing. Lost in nature’s performance—a feast of silver grass—I forgot where I was headed and stayed there, absorbed for a long while.

Akkeun Darangshi Oreum2705, Sehwa-ri, Gujwa-eup, Jeju-si

A small oreum located across from Darangshi Oreum; in Jeju dialect, its name conveys the meaning “small Darangshi.” With a relatively short trail, it’s easy to hike without much 부담, and from the summit you can enjoy beautiful views of a round crater together with the surrounding oreums. In particular, in autumn the entire oreum becomes a spectacular sea of silver grass, letting you fully experience the unique charm of Jeju’s oreums. If you’d like to encounter Jeju’s nature up close in a quiet atmosphere, it’s well worth a visit. It’s also a great spot to pair with Darangshi Oreum for an eastern Jeju oreum trip.
