Visiting Daepyeong-ri Village, Loved Even by a Film Director.

There’s a village in Jeju Island that I love more than anywhere else. It’s Daepyeong-ri Village—small and charming yet full of character, embracing nature at its finest.

Daepyeong-ri Village became famous when film director Jang Sun-woo—known for movies like Bad Movie, Petal, and Lies—traveled here, fell in love with the beauty of Baksugijeong, and eventually settled down in the village. Though many standards and debates came and went along the thin line between obscenity and art, there is no doubt he is a master whose work was recognized as art, winning Best Director at the Blue Dragon Film Awards, Baeksang Arts Awards, and the Grand Bell Awards.

This is a café that Director Jang Sun-woo used to run. I’m not sure if it’s still operating. I think the last time I saw it open was around 2016. After that, whenever I passed by, I often saw it overgrown with weeds—though recently I did notice the yard had been cleared again. It doesn’t look like it’s being run by him now.

Along the coast of Daepyeong-ri Village lies Baksugijeong, a dramatic rocky sea cliff. Its presence feels both grand and subtle, with a charm that draws people in. After rain, the contrast of light and shadow becomes even clearer, so I often come here the day after it rains.

The hill behind Daepyeong-ri Village is Gunsan Oreum. It’s amazing to have such a stunning oreum right behind the village—something that feels possible only in Jeju, one of Korea’s biggest tourist destinations.

Gunsan Oreum has a road that lets you drive all the way to the summit, making it a popular choice for those who want an easy climb. From the top, Hallasan rises tall behind you, while ahead you can see Marado far out at sea, Songaksan, and Sanbangsan. In the distance, the coastline of Seogwipo stretches out in a panoramic view.

At sunset, many people come here to chase the evening glow—it’s truly a sunset spot.

Daepyeong-ri Village has long been recognized for its beauty and is a place many visitors come to see. That’s why throughout the village you’ll find small pensions, hotels, restaurants, and charming little goods shops and cafés. Each place has its own personality and vibe that suits Daepyeong-ri well, so nothing feels out of place.

Whenever I visited Daepyeong-ri Village, I used to rest at a small café in front of Baksugijeong. But this place also expanded to compete with the big cafés that have moved in nearby, and I don’t think it can be “my own spot” anymore.

Daepyeong-ri sits right next to Jungmun Tourist Complex, Jeju’s largest tourism district, so it’s an easy outing for travelers staying in Jungmun. If you ever find yourself in Daepyeong-ri Village, I hope you’ll wander through the alleyways and fully enjoy its uniquely Jeju-like beauty.
