I visited Geumneung Beach, the earliest-opening beach in Korea. Starting today, 12 beaches in Jeju open first, and the rest will open on July 1. Seeing the opening pushed up by a whole week compared to last year, it feels like the climate crisis is already changing our everyday life.

Everyone from the village association came out and preparations are in full swing. These days in Jeju, every beach gets covered with things like gulfweed and other debris pushed up onto the sand by the waves, so it can get really messy—but the locals were cleaning it all up. It really hit me again: “This is why we get to enjoy clean beaches.” Of course, it also means the busy season’s business is starting again, but still—what keeps the neighborhood going is the local residents.

No matter how much they clear, it feels like it’ll never end;;

The parasols have all been set up, and the shower rooms are being cleaned up nicely. Since my family are Jeju residents, we’ve brought our own shade canopy before, but we’ve never actually rented a parasol. Still, carrying this kind of gear around is such a hassle. Last summer, we rented a tent at Panpo Port, and it was seriously convenient. This year, if we go to Geumneung Beach, I’m going to try renting a tent. - Tent 100,000 won / Bungalow 50,000 won / Parasol + mat 20,000 won * Seems like there’s no time limit - And the pine grove next to Geumneung Beach allows camping, so it’s also great to bring your own tent.

It used to annoy me every time seeing people “claim” spots in advance, but from this year they’ll charge fees during peak season, so those inconsiderate behaviors should disappear. I also heard the parking lot will start charging only during peak season from this year.

Geumneung Beach and Hyeopjae Beach are connected. I walked to Hyeopjae Beach along the promenade.

I think it’s been about 3 years since they planted the palm trees. All the leaves dried up and fell off, then came back green again. Thanks to that, the scenery feels even more exoticㅎㅎ

You can see the Hyeopjae Beach sculpture—something Geumneung doesn’t have. I imagine how exciting that moment must feel when you’re here on a tripㅎㅎ

Most travelers head to Hyeopjae Beach. I think it’s because many don’t even know Geumneung Beach is there, and as you come along the road, Hyeopjae Beach appears first. On the other hand, Jeju locals often go to Geumneung Beach. With its wide sandy stretch and shallow water, it’s great for families..

Connected to Hyeopjae Beach, Geumneung Beach offers a calmer, more relaxed atmosphere while remaining one of Jeju’s most beloved beaches. Its clear, transparent emerald sea, fine white sand, and the beautiful view of Biyangdo Island across the water attract many visitors. With shallow, gently sloping waters, it’s ideal for families to enjoy swimming and playing in the sea. At low tide, the beach widens dramatically, revealing natural tidal pools that add a special charm. Recommended for anyone who wants to enjoy stunning sunsets and an unhurried seaside walk. Currently operating normally and open year-round.
