This Summer Is Your Last Chance: 3 Jeju Ports to Remember Through Diving

Water activities at Jeju’s ports will change from 2027. This summer, we safely enjoyed swimming and diving at Panpo Port, Gimnyeong Segial Beach, and Gudumi Port, turning the final season into an exciting memory.

There are many reasons to look forward to summer in Jeju, and for me, playing in the water at its ports was one of them.

You look down at the sea from a breakwater warmed by the sun, count one, two, three, and jump. After a brief moment in the air, the cold seawater envelops your entire body, instantly making the trip to Jeju feel worthwhile.

But scenes like this may soon become memories. From April 2027, water activities such as swimming and diving are scheduled to be prohibited within fishing port zones.

It is disappointing, but we still have this summer. Rather than feeling sad too soon, why not make the most of one last season of portside fun while following the safety rules?

We revisited three places where you could experience the thrill of port diving in Jeju: Panpo Port, Gimnyeong Segial Beach, and Gudumi Port.

Panpo Port, the star of Jeju’s portside water activities

It is hard to talk about playing in the water at Jeju’s ports without mentioning Panpo Port.

In summer, the breakwater fills with people, while colorful inflatable tubes drift across the water. For one season, this small port in a quiet fishing village transforms into a vast outdoor swimming pool.

The biggest reason Panpo Port became so popular is undoubtedly the color of its water. On bright, sunny days, a vivid blue glow reaches deep inside the port. Even simply floating on the surface makes you feel as though you are right in the heart of a Jeju summer.

But it would be a shame to do nothing but float around Panpo Port. The real excitement here came from diving into the sea from the breakwater.

When you first climb up, it feels higher than it looked from below. Watching the person ahead of you leap in may give you courage, but when your turn comes, it is still difficult to lift your feet from the edge.

Yet once you take a deep breath and jump with all your strength, all that hesitation suddenly feels unnecessary. The fact that you swim straight back toward the breakwater as soon as you surface proves that port diving has an undeniable pull.

Of the three destinations, Panpo Port is the liveliest and the easiest place to soak up the atmosphere of a day by the water. On the other hand, the midsummer crowds can make parking and getting around inconvenient. Visit during the relatively quiet morning hours to enjoy the clear water and port scenery at a more leisurely pace.

For scenery as well as swimming, Gimnyeong Segial Beach

If Panpo Port feels like a giant summer playground, Gimnyeong Segial Beach leaves a stronger impression of Jeju’s eastern seascape.

White sand, clear water, a red lighthouse, and wind turbines all fit into a single view. It is enough to make you reach for your camera before you even enter the water.

At low tide, broad stretches of sand and shallow water emerge, making it ideal for a casual paddle. Head toward the port, and you can see people enjoying swimming and diving.

On days when the water viewed from the breakwater looks exceptionally transparent, it is hard to resist. After checking the depth and your entry point, leap into the sea and the cold water will quickly make your body feel weightless. Once you have jumped the first time, you will notice that it takes far less time to summon the courage for the second.

One advantage of Segial Beach is that there is plenty to enjoy before and after your swim. You can stroll along Gimnyeong’s coastline, enter the water when it gets hot, then come back out and relax while gazing at the red lighthouse and the sea.

It is also known as a major filming location for the drama Welcome to Samdal-ri, so there is fun in searching for familiar scenes. If you want both water activities and quintessential Jeju scenery, this may be the first of the three places that comes to mind.

Small but inviting Gudumi Port

Gudumi Port is smaller than Panpo Port or Segial Beach, and its atmosphere is considerably calmer.

Follow the village road through Bomok-dong in Seogwipo, and a compact port and the sea come into view. I liked how it felt less like arriving at a tourist attraction and more like quietly joining a swimming spot frequented by locals every summer.

Gudumi Port was charming for its small size and peaceful atmosphere

Because the port is small, you hear the swimmers’ laughter and the splashes of people jumping into the water from close by. When someone takes the first plunge, laughter erupts around them, and another person who saw it climbs back onto the breakwater.

At first, I also planned to simply soak in the water and relax. But after watching one dive after another, I eventually found myself standing on the breakwater.

After a brief hesitation, I jumped into the sea. Emerging from the refreshing water, I looked out across the ocean toward Seopseom Island. It may lack elaborate facilities, but of the three places, this was where the feeling of “spending summer in Jeju” was most vivid.

Gudumi Port is well suited to those who would rather swim at a small, relaxed port than visit a bustling water-play destination. Afterward, it is also pleasant to explore Bomok Village and the coastal road at a leisurely pace.

Which of the three should you visit?

If you want a lively atmosphere and the quintessential Jeju port-swimming experience, choose Panpo Port first.

If you also want scenery combining blue water, white sand, and a lighthouse, Gimnyeong Segial Beach is a great choice.

If you prefer swimming and diving at a small port with relatively few people, Gudumi Port may leave the strongest impression.

Whichever you choose, first check the tide, weather, and any on-site restrictions. Water depth can change suddenly at ports, which are also used by boats. Before diving, check your entry point and look for underwater obstacles. Wear a life jacket and take turns jumping safely, one person at a time. If diving is prohibited or lifeguards impose restrictions, it is best to stick to swimming that day.

Calling it the “last” summer does not mean you should take greater risks than usual. A summer worth remembering is a journey only when you return home without injury.

From next year, it will be difficult to see people jumping into the sea from breakwaters. So this summer, pack the swimsuit and life jacket you have been putting aside and head to one of Jeju’s ports.

Remember the nerves before the jump, the refreshing instant you hit the sea, and the laughter as you surface and suggest going again.

May this final summer spent at Jeju’s ports remain an exciting memory for years to come, rather than a source of regret.
