Even Jeju’s endlessly blue summer has, before we knew it, stepped into autumn.

There are certain moments when you can instinctively tell the seasons are changing. In Jeju, when silvery silver grass begins to bloom along the roadsides, when orchard tangerines ripen into a deep orange, and when those fresh green leaves slowly blush red and turn into autumn foliage—only then can you say autumn has truly reached its peak.

🌾 Silvery Silver Grass

Unlike reeds that grow by the water, silver grass grows on mountain slopes. That’s why you often see it on Jeju’s oreum. The feeling you get from those shimmering silver waves swaying in the soft breeze is beyond words. Especially under Jeju’s richly blue autumn sky—when you watch the silver grass ripple like a dance across breathtaking open fields, and catch the evening sunset reddening between the stalks—you come to understand the true romance of Jeju.

🍊 Tangerines in Orange

One thing that amazed me after moving to Jeju: the sight of big, orange tangerines hanging heavy in the yard. Strangely, they looked so perfectly at home with Jeju’s stone walls that it created a scene you don’t see anywhere else.

Maybe that’s when it started.

When autumn comes to Jeju, I find myself walking the lanes of rural villages. Around the time the green tangerines beyond Jeju’s rugged yet meticulously built batdam begin to ripen into orange, the countryside becomes a picture—like a painting no landscape artwork could outdo.

🍁 The Red of Autumn Foliage

The symbol of autumn is probably fall foliage, isn’t it? The multicolored leaves, dyed in every shade, move you in a way words can’t fully capture.

The foliage that begins at the summit of Hallasan spreads to color the entire mountain, depending on the timing.
