October in Jeju is ideal for daytime walks, but evening arrives earlier than you might expect. If you keep adding attractions while planning to see the sunset on the west coast, you may find yourself looking for a parking space just as the sun begins to sink. The Hangyeong-myeon area, where Suwolbong Peak, Jagunae Port, and Dangsanbong Peak are clustered together, is perfect for spending an afternoon without traveling far.
Plan your sunset trip around sunset time
Check the sunset time on the day of your trip and arrive at your chosen viewpoint at least 30 minutes beforehand. Because sunset varies by date, what matters more than the clock times below is how many minutes remain before sunset.
3 hours before sunset: Walk among Jeju’s geological strata at Suwolbong Peak
At Suwolbong Peak, it would be a shame to look only at the sea and leave. First take in the view toward Chagwido Island from around the summit, then, if time and weather permit, walk slowly toward Eongal Coast, where volcanic ash layers are exposed. It is easy to spend longer than expected on the trail below the coast. Once you factor in time to examine the strata up close and take photos, this is best treated as more than a quick stop.

If anyone in your group finds walking difficult, simply enjoy the view near the summit. If you descend to Eongal Coast, allow extra time for the round trip. In strong wind or rain, focus on the viewpoints instead of the coastal trail.
1 hour 30 minutes before sunset: Take a break at Jagunae Port
Drive from Suwolbong Peak to Jagunae Port, and fishing boats, the breakwater, and Chagwido Island all fit into a single frame. The port offers beautiful scenery, but it is also a working space for local residents. Rather than parking in a traffic lane or taking photos beside fishing gear, use a designated parking area and walk in.
This is a good time to have a simple drink and choose where to watch the sunset. If the sky is clear and you would like to walk more, choose Dangsanbong Peak. If the wind is strong or you prefer a shorter finish, stay around Suwolbong Peak or the port. Instead of trying to visit both viewpoints near sunset, settling into one spot early will ultimately give you a better sunset experience.
40 minutes before sunset: Head up to the Dangsanbong Peak viewpoint
Dangsanbong Peak is the option for those who want more of a walk than Suwolbong Peak. Official tourist information distinguishes between a short route and a slightly longer one, but the actual walking time varies depending on where you start and how often you rest. Factoring in parking and navigation, it is safest to begin your walk at least 40 minutes before sunset.

At the viewpoint, do not wait only for the moment when the sun touches the sea. The colors of the sky and water continue changing for a while after the sun has gone down. However, you should start descending before the trail becomes dark, so avoid an itinerary that leaves you relying solely on your phone’s flashlight.
A less strenuous alternative: Watch from Suwolbong Peak or the port
If you are traveling with children or anyone who has difficulty walking for long periods, you can easily skip Dangsanbong Peak. Waiting for sunset near the summit of Suwolbong Peak or at Jagunae Port involves less travel and still offers scenery featuring Chagwido Island. On particularly windy days, a nearby parking spot and a convenient route back can make a major difference to your overall experience.
Three things to check before setting out
First, check the sunset time and cloud forecast for the day of your trip.
Second, save the parking location and return route for your final chosen viewpoint.
Third, bring a light outer layer to prepare for the wind along the west coast.
On a sunset trip, reaching your final destination on time matters more than knowing many different places. See the textures of Jeju’s land at Suwolbong Peak, catch your breath at Jagunae Port, and then welcome the evening from your favorite viewpoint. Even the same sunset will be remembered completely differently depending on where you waited for it.
