A Mysterious Waterfall That Only Flows When It Rains on Hallasan

After days of fierce wind and rain, a blue sky finally started to show today.

A long golden holiday had begun, but with the angry weather we were stuck at home—so when the skies cleared and that bright blue appeared, we happily headed out with the kids.

We left home and made our way to Eongtto Falls in Seogwipo City.

Eongtto Falls is a mysterious waterfall: most days it simply shows off its dramatic rocky cliff, but when it rains on Hallasan, a waterfall suddenly appears.

Usually a dry waterfall with no running water, this is a unique spot where a waterfall forms only after heavy rain falls around Hallasan. The stream plunging from a roughly 50m-high cliff can be seen only for a short time, creating an even more special scene. With well-maintained deck paths and walking trails, it’s great for a light stroll, and the surrounding lush warm-temperate forest makes the walk itself wonderfully relaxing. Visiting the day after rain lets you experience a distinctive side of nature found only in Jeju, making it a recommended stop for travelers who love natural scenery. Checking recent rainfall is important before visiting.

Maybe because it was the day after rain, it seemed like a lot of people had come, as expected.

From the intersection leading toward Eongtto Falls, police officers were directing traffic.

On ordinary days you can drive all the way to the parking lot at the entrance, but after rain—especially on clear days like this—there are often times you have to start walking from the main road.

After finally finding a parking spot, we started walking toward Eongtto Falls. The road leading to the falls boasts beautiful scenery—beautiful enough that the Jeju Olle Trail Route 7-1 passes through.

A scent carried on the breeze tickled my nose. Looking around, there weren’t any flowers that particularly stood out. The gentle fragrance almost smelled like acacia blossoms, but there’s no way acacias would be blooming in this season. When I looked more closely, the tangerine trees were covered in blossoms.

“It’s already time for the tangerine blossoms to be in full bloom.”

Around late May into June, people in Jeju get busy thinning out tangerine blossoms. This year feels a bit early.

Before we knew it, we arrived at the entrance to Eongtto Falls.

The same unchanging, spectacular view 펼쳐졌다 before our eyes. Unfortunately, the stream of the waterfall isn’t as strong as I expected.

The last time we visited on a rainy day, the water was so powerful that it was a little scary.

Most people come to Eongtto Falls to see a massive waterfall on a rainy day. 

But Eongtto Falls on a clear day has a different charm. A crystal-clear day right after rain is the best of all, but even if the waterfall isn’t flowing, our family still drops by from time to time when the weather is nice.

The dramatic rocky cliffs of Eongtto Falls, the trees surrounding it like a folding screen, and the view of a single building standing guard on a hill full of tangerine trees somehow makes it feel as if you’ve come to Europe.
